cross-training

in an email from my university I noticed yesterday the aerobic schedule for the spring semester and the kick boxing class caught my attention; however, being a "non-traditional student", I wasn't all that keen on bouncing my overweight, out-of-shape, self around in a room full of 18 and 19 year olds. A chance conversation at work today provided me with the knowledge that three of my coworkers were planning on attending this kick boxing class (none of whom are traditional students) and so I made plans with one of them to hitch a ride with her to the class. The other two coworkers bailed on the idea shortly before quitting time, but my ride and I went anyway. Ok, yeah, I am so out of shape, but FUN!! My legs fatigued early and my calves were already starting to feel stiff when I got out of the car after getting home. My arms faired rather well though (all those push-ups :) and I am looking forward to the next class. My companion in this adventure pointed out afterwards that we were, in fact, the oldest ones there, but she continued by making note of what I was thinking before she said it - some of those present were obviously having a tougher time continuing through the workout than us "old" women. I am optimistic regarding the outcomes if I actually make a habit of attending this class. We shall see...

  1. I was the oldest person in my pilates /yoga class last summer--but also the most fit and flexible. I had all the young ladies in awe (and what gay woman wouldn't enjoy that?!). It was so much fun!

Enjoy your class. And by the way, I think you should consider joining me in the Bolder Boulder 10K on Memorial Day. When was the last time you were in Boulder, CO? :)

  2. Hmm. I've heard/read of the Bolder Boulder and the last time I was in any part of CO for any longer than it took to make a connecting flight, was in '98 as I drove through on my way to San Diego.
    Interesting idea...
