I have a couple friends who have never run a marathon, but think they want to do so. Knowing I've completed a few marathons in the past they've enlisted me to train them. On one hand, I find this humorous given my blazing 12 minute per mile pace, but on the other, I'm happy to help want to be runners (they've never really run any distance, but have been involved in other exercise endeavors) and I do know what needs to be done to get ready for covering 26.2 miles. I'm also happy to have the accountability and external motivation to keep me running regularly. We get together to run each Saturday morning. Last week we covered 7 miles and yesterday put in an easy 5. It has been a few years since I've done a whole marathon. I think it's time for another.

Losing my muffin
After a couple fruitless years of trying to get back in shape and lose some weight, I believe I've finally turned a corner. So far this year, I have lost an average of 2 pounds each month which is painfully slow to me but is steady progress. I've also been running at least once a week for the past two months. Again, not a lot, but consistent effort. As a result I am a couple sizes smaller hence the muffin top has vanished and the running is getting easier and longer. I do believe a marathon is in my future this fall. Go me :)

Masochism
I sent an email expressing my enjoyment of a run and thanking a friend for getting me out for 3.5 miles when I was rather exhausted already from a few hours of hard manual labor earlier in the day. She sent me the following response:
"Joy in self mutilation ... you are in your very heart of hearts a runner.
Jog on my sick, sick friend."
Made me smile. I may yet be very slow, but, yes, I am a runner.
